Prioritizing

I’m guilty of trying to do too much. I’m easily distracted by shiny new things. I often change priorities quickly and without thought because I think the next thing is the most important thing.

I needed some help in order to become a better husband, father, coach, business owner, and not drive my wife crazy!

Recently I joined a fitness business coaching group. There are a number of reasons why.

First I believe in coaching. Movement Fitness is a coaching based facility.  Our goal is to coach our clients to achieve their goals. They want someone to hold them accountable, push them beyond their limits and help them achieve their goals.

It’s no different for me. So I hired someone to help me become a better business owner.

Second, We did this to help organize our business and focus on the priorities at hand rather than trying to chase every opportunity that arises.  Once we joined, the first thing we found was the importance of prioritizing. Setting up your calendar and making sure that you are running the day and not the other way around.  Organizing your thoughts and actions around what is TRULY important by making a list of overall priorities and constantly revisiting them.

I found this has dramatically changed my approach and is helping my productivity. By setting priorities in advance it makes a significant difference for me to continue moving towards my goals and achieving the things that I want to accomplish. Before, I was busy; now I am productive.

It is no different for you.  When you think of making a change, weight loss, a job, kids, school, what ever it is that you are facing, if you want to be your best, it is important to prioritize.

Take weight loss.  If you really want to lose weight, it is not complicated, but it’s also not easy.  If you truly want to change, then prioritizing your life around that goal will be important.

By taking a step back and really analyzing your priorities, you can quickly find out where you are making mistakes.  Ask yourself questions like this.

  1.  Why do you want to do this, REALLY?
  2. Are your prepared BEFORE you leave the house to eat properly all day?
  3. Do you know what meals you are going to have before the day or week begins?
  4. Do you know what event’s or activities will occur today or this week that have the potential to throw you off track?
  5. Are you drinking enough water?
  6. Are you eating enough protein and vegetables?
  7. Is there ONE thing that you can cut out today that will help you achieve your goal faster?
  8. Can you prepare a meal or meals this week that will help you out when you get in that eventual bind?
  9. Are you really giving it your all?

None of these are really INSPIRED or MIND BLOWING concepts.  What they are though, is prioritization!  You are choosing to make yourself and your health a priority.

When you choose not to do these things, what you are really saying is that your health and your goals are really not a priority!  You are letting the day run you, rather than the other way around.  So take the time and prioritize the things that are most important to you.  And if you are not prepared, you will end up like the non prioritized version of me, who chases shiny things.  The glow of the arches (or other shiny things) are very bright and they will get you!
